Villa MonasteroVarenna (LC)

The project, divided into three lots, included the consolidation, meeting current buildings regulations, reorganising the Foresteria (guest lodge) and the North Wing, shoring up the lake walls and restoring and restructuring the Porters’ Lodge. The works were carried out for the Province of Lecco (which has owned the Villa since 1977) in agreement with the CNR (National Research Council – the buildings occupants) and with financing from the Cariplo Foundation.

The aim was to find the most appropriate uses for the differing spaces and generally enhance the complex.

The internal work largely involved maximising the reception potential of the existing spaces, by creating adequate support services for the cultural events promoted by the Foundation (set up by the Public Body that has acted as its Trustee since 1996). One of the projects difficulties was the requirement for a new electrical sub-station, due of the extraordinary quality and botanical worth of the external landscaping.

Abstract:
Formerly a Cistercian Convent, with records dating back to the 8th century, which was suppressed by Pope Pius in 1567, the Villa was converted into a patrician dwelling by Lelio Mornico during the first half of the seventeenth century. The Oratory, refurbished in 1675, which now corresponds to the “Sala Fermi”, continued to be used for worship until 1897, when the property was purchased by the German shipowner Walter Kees.
