The sanctuary Santa Maria del LavelloCalolziocorte (LC)

The pitiful condition of the pictorial decoration, as with most of the surfaces in the nave, was due above all to wall dampness, favoured by the proximity of the Adda river and surface condensation. The projects objectives were to satisfy both the conservative e functional needs of the monument as a liturgical space and cultural asset.

The work permitted to the discovery and revival - beneath layers of successive repainting - of the iconographical scheme in the two side apses and on the north wall the decoration of the chapel dedicated to the Saints of Mary, where, beside the triumphal arch two fine tondi of the Virgin Mary and the Angel Gabriel were uncovered.

To counteract the static insufficiencies evidenced by the detachment and shifting of the façade towards the church square, the wall was anchored to the perimeter walls by a wooden bracing diaphragm mounted under the choir floor, also removing the loads on the damaged cross vaulting below. While to contain the horizontal thrust of the vault on the external side wall of the last chapel on the right, a steel tie was inserted on the back wall of the apse.

Abstract:
The artistic historiographical interest of the Sanctuary of Lavello is owed above all to the fine interior decoration that bears witness to its importance as a place of pilgrimage since the fifteenth century. The building, a single chamber divided into three bays by two transverse arches on which rest the timber roof structure, .presents in correspondence with the apse in two barrel vaulted chapels, the pediments of which are framed by pilasters with plinths and capitals in Sarnico Stone.
